Urban Architectural Design of Tongji’s Design and Research Institute was founded in 2005. It is the result of the joint venture between the College of Architecture and Urban Planning and Tongji Architectural Design and Research Institute. Together, these entities have design certificates issued by the State Ministry of Construction in various fields.

Based on the academic strength of CAUP and the Architectural Design and Research Institute of Tongji University, Urban Architecture Design Institute has strong design abilities and ample human resources. More than 70 senior architects and 50 nationally registered architects are currently on staff. The Institute has 8 Architectural Design Studios and 4 Research Centers of Urban Design, Landscape Design, Historic Building Protection and Regeneration, and Spatial and Environmental Art Design. The Institute has also established a complete quality assurance system.

Recently, the Institute has completed many representative works, such as the reconstruction of the State Banquet Hall of the Great Hall of the People, the reconstruction of Xintiandi Plaza in Shanghai, the Nanjing Road Pedestrian Street in Shanghai, the Jing’an Temple Plaza in Shanghai, the Hangzhou Civic Center, and the Table Tennis Center for the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games. Many projects have also won national design awards.
