The Department of Landscape Studies
 
 

Introduction
Tongji University is one of the first universities in China to establish a Landscape Architecture program when the Department of Landscape Studies was approved by the Ministry of Education in 2005. Its predecessor was called Landscape and Gardening, which was later renamed, Landscape Science and Tourism in 1996. The Department of Landscape Studies offers a program of landscape studies for bachelors’ degree, landscape planning and design for both masters’ and doctoral degrees, and landscape architecture professional masters’ degree. Currently, 60 undergraduates, 90 postgraduates, and 10 doctoral students are enrolled each year.

With a 48 year history, founded on the collaboration of both Architecture and Urban Planning divisions of CAUP, the Department of Landscape Studies has developed a unique landscape architecture education system which is oriented by modern landscape studies while combining the disciplines of architecture, urban planning, agriculture and horticulture, geography and management.

Objectives
Our graduates are developed to be well equipped to practice and advance the profession of landscape architecture. Great emphasis is placed on training students to thrive in the numerous careers and facets of landscape architecture professional practice, such as: landscape resources, environment and ecological protection, landscape planning and design, urban design, tourism planning, and landscape construction management.

Academic Staff
Currently, there are 22 faculty members in the Department of Landscape Studies, including 4 professors, 7 associate professors, 11 lecturers, 1 honorary professor, and 2 part-time professors. There are 6 doctoral advisors and 9 masters’ student supervisors.

Curriculums
The programs cover 3 fields: (1) landscape and resources; (2) planning and design; (3) engineering and technology. Core courses include: Theory of Landscape Planning and Design, Landscape Planning and Design Workshop, Study of Landscape Resources, Landscape Ecology, Theory of National Scenic Area and Historic Sites Planning, Architectural Design, History of Chinese and Foreign Gardening, Planning of Urban Green Space Systems, The Appropriation of Garden Plants, Planting Design, Urban Planning, Landscape Architecture, Gardening Engineering, etc.

Educational and Research Achievements
After half a century of development, the Department of Landscape Studies has set-up comprehensive research and teaching structures, both of which have been successful. Eight research projects, supported by National Natural Science Foundation of China, and dozens of research projects at provincial and ministerial levels have been completed or are being undertaken. Department faculty members have published more than 30 monographs, 400 scientific papers, finished several hundred projects covering the survey of landscape resources, master planning of tourism, green space systems planning, detailed design, landscape architectural design, etc. Under the auspice of the International Federation of Landscape Architects (IFLA), it successfully hosted the First International Landscape Studies Education Symposium in 2005 at which 99 colleges and agencies from China and abroad attended.
